Across the Aisle: Demonetising notes or demonising cash?

It has emerged, through whispers of course, that besides the Prime Minister no more than four officials were in the loop, and the Chief Economic Adviser was not among the four!

http://indianexpress.com/article/opinion/columns/across-the-aisle-demonetising-notes-or-demonising-cash-500-1000-new-currency-indian-currency/

PC should take lesson in arithmetics.

Poor arithmetic by an ex FM. To replace 15k cr (Rs. 500 notes)&7k cr (Rs. 1k notes), 15/4 7/2 = 7.25k cr notes of Rs.2k enuf

Surgical strike’ post-Uri was NOT intended to put an end to infiltrations, Dear Chidu

Surgical strike on Paki dogs was intended to avenge the Uri ambush by those dogs

    ——

The ‘surgical strike’ on currency has resulted in the immiserisation of millions of people and bringing many sectors of the economy to a grinding halt.

    Yes.

But you have forgotten the most important positive result. Crippling ‘anti national criminal politicians’ like you, Pappu, Didi, Behenji, Netaji, Kujli which has been successfully accomplished starving you of all the ill gotten wealth used to influence elections.

But the millions of people who have been aggrieved or immiserised have equivocally declared they don’t mind this temporary nuisances.

    ——

I shudder to think what the next ‘surgical strike’ will be & what dreadful consequences that will bring.

The next will be ‘surgical strike’ on BENAMI PROPERTY. NDA Government has precise information of the properties & real states owned by ALL the politicians under BENAMI NAME. Specifically, the Govt has all the records & information of the 25000 acre BENAMI FOREST LAND in Karnataka, 18 Bungalows in Tamilnadu owned by you.

All those BENAMI OWNERS will intensively interrogated & the properties seized by the Government.

    ——

The ‘fourth surgical strike’ will be on bullion.

Though the Govt does not have the ‘precise information’ of the gold owned by illegitimate looters, they have an approximate estimate of the illegal possession of gold.

Here too the attack will be sharp. All the banks’ lockers throughout India will be frozen & the gold seized unless the owner is able to explain the source of purchase of gold.

Deeply regret, the author and the paid commentators here, dared to refer the root cause for black money generation ie corruption. Had this been tackled since last 30 months with thousands of cases caught and charged, enormous credit would have been gained, but again, regretfully, it is felt act of gimmickry would suffice.

It is pity he was the finance minister of India once.
Kaise kaise log bhi finance minister ban jaatey they.
That is why India’s haalat even after almost 70 years of independence is very pathetic.

As he was the FM once therefore he should know that moves like demonetisation brings the economy to the crawling stage initially in the short run but it gets backs to the original vibrancy after a month or so.

He should know that prices of the essential commodities did not go up (in fact prices are coming down).
Neither there is scarcity of essential goods.
    Actually people are becoming frugal.

Chidambaram should also know that demonetisation is one of the most effective tools to fight corruption and black money.
If he is does not know it already then he should be in the hall of shame of economists.

He is simply envious because what he could not accomplish Modi and Jaitley achieved easily.

Mr. Chidambaram, it requires one to be true nationalist to implement measures like demonetisation.

All talks and no show makes one a Palaniappan Chidambaram.

In short PC is justifying that Corruption and Black market will continue to thrive,so that he,his son and his affiliated party makes a moola in the name of serving the poor.
Further,PC says 4 officials in the loop where as his parties VP Pappu says 15.Get the figures checked?Only a couple of years ago his party said an average Indian can liveon Rs10 per day.so why is PC imagining that an average Indian holds Rs500/-.
Instead of crying and condemning, let PC as a former FM take a holistic view and offer suggestions to eliminate the scourge of corruption and black money

Chidambaram is one of the most shameful and cunning politicians in Indian politics. This man was in power so many years but he has never tried to control the corruption. Remember he was the finance minister and the home minister of India over 10 years.
He has tried to change the ground reports due to political vendetta.

Reliability of Indian Currency had faded due to manner of demonetization. It has been done like an earthquake. Govt did not even know that that a foreign tourist exchange currency at airport of arrival.I do not think that those tourists who were put this hurdle will again visit India. This is a peak export season to America and other European countries. Thousands of workers have left industrial towns. Industry owners are helpless and have no money to pay wages. Export orders cannot wait for 50 days as demanded by PM. If supply to foreign buyer is disturbed he will go another country. Once a foreign buyer is lost by exporter he will never get him back. No foreign buyer will take risk of his business by place order to Indian exporters because of unpredictable political decisions of a Govt.

Biggest fun is that a cow ( which we call our MAATA) producing milk in a remote village is being treated as a factory converting black money to white and farmer is not allowed to sell milk against old notes whereas petrol produced in refinery is being sold at petrol pumps in crores of rupees every day but do not convert black money in to white. Such discriminatory treatment is not given even by kings and dictators. I had written a mail to Hon’ble President of India also on this but I do not know whether he has read it. Govt has allowed free passage through Toll Roads giving relief to vehicle owners but has not given any relief to those poor persons who walk along with their cattle and have not seen roads in their life. Do they not deserve free food for them and their cattle till money supply is improved? Home Minister said that demonetization will reduce difference between rich and poor but how? Govt cannot treat milk produced in village and petrol produced in a refinery equal. Are petrol refinery owners not becoming richer and richer as they are free to sell their product against banned notes. Whereas a farmer who is hardly getting milk of 500 rupee a day from a cow cannot sell a drop of it. Has this act of the Govt not further widened the gap between the poor and rich. I am inviting all persons who are favoring demonetization and its manner of execution to explain to the country how it will reduce gap between a refinery owner and poor farmer .

Mr. Chidambaram, as a politician from Tamil Nadu you know the way business is done there by carrying wads of currency in Yellow bags not paying a single paise as tax to the government. You have tried to answer various situations and also have asked various question. However the most important part of the demonetization, unearthing or destruction of black money is not explained. For example imagine congress party have 1000 crore rupee in cash. This is required to conduct all you rallys and protests, election expense etc etc. How will you convert all these money? May be you can use some of your workers to convert a few crores but definitely not even 10%. Same situation with criminals and terrorists. Their current base will be destroyed. They/you need to build up the fund again. But as per current rules, it may be difficult to amass money in cash and gold like it was done previously. If this much is achieved, it itself is a big achievement and the peoples suffering is worth the cause.

This article is THE burning evidence of the wrong policies Congress party and its leadership were following in the past and tend to follow in future. By this article Chiddu is indirectly supporting and writing in favor of black money. PC is almost suggesting that if demonetization cannot stop people taking bribe, counterfeiting or 100% plug the black money, why to take such a drastic step of demonetization? His line of argument is that if you cannot stop people taking bribe let the GOES on. Let the people continue to keep the BAGS of black money and Let the so called parallel economy goes on. By the way, does ANY step by ANY govt will 100% stop corruption or counterfeiting or 100% plug the black money? Also, By the way has ANYBODY claimed that India will be 100% corruption free society? Does there such a society exist anywhere in this world? PC is giving all the weak arguments to oppose a BOLD move by the BJP Govt…………….Nobody claimed that surgical strikes will 100% stop the cross border infiltration. its just a different policy, significantly different than the strategic restrain policy of Congress party. BJP is of the opinion that if you want to live with respect and dignity in the society , you have to be stronger and muscular.

Most of the people I have met these days grumble about it. Our usal kirana shop these days have limited sales. Teashop wallah’s and many auto-wallahs are all complaining about lost business. Many NBFC’s are suffering because they are not receiving most of their monthly repayments by their debtors. Just look that the share prices of NBFC’s have lost value (about 12%).

in 1965, Gen. Ayub, in order to consolidate his power, which he was appearing to lose, started a war with India. No Pakistani could oppose Ayub then for fear of being branded anti-national. Pakistan hasn’t recovered, economically, ever since.

There is real fear that free trade agreements signed between various governments will be in real danger very soon. High chance that the biggest bubble will burst and most of the currency will be in no men’s land. Beware, Those who stocked dollar. Actually ruling elite don’t want paper money any more, it has served its purpose. Yes, we will move to cashless transactions, but the real loser will be poor and middle class. Cashless means corporates and bankers rule.

If I were the PM, I would have discussed the idea with all possible economic brains in the system not once but multiple times.Obviously I would not have gone past this stage. But if for a minute I assume that the recommendation was to go ahead with this idea, the only think that I would have maintained secrecy of would have been the time of implementation. Maintaining secrecy at the concept stage probably was the strategic mistake.

Because of 65 years of corruption at the top (political leadership), that seeped into bureaucracy, which seeped into trade, and then which seeped into common man’s life, the most affected were the also in that order, common man being the most. With this move justice has been done, the most adversely affected are also in that order, politicians being the most, poetic justice if you will.

note less than 3% population pays income tax….means 97% of the population falls below 2.5lakhs / annum

a number of small business and service providers such as road side vendors, small shops, gorceries, tailors, barber, small farming, a number of small eateries / restarants , dhaabas, small transportaions / taxi/ autorickshae etc etc etc….. have profit ( or declared profit) less than 2.5Lakhs / annum…so they do not pay taxes

to generate those profits —> their revenues must be anywhere from 3 to 8 times more i.e 8 to 20 lakhs….a lot of it ( majoriyt of it) cash based transactions. And so many of them may need more than 4000 per week

And taking cash out chokes the small economy that falls below the taxable limits.

And many many crores of people from the 92 crore above and 30 crore below the porverty line are dependent on this largely-cash-based-below-taxable-limit economy

This is the last ditch efforts by the ruling elite to control the masses by dictatorial policy. They fear they will lose power since people are awakening and realising & analyzing the truth. Regarding cashless economy many economists now realize it’s danger as it will give unflinching power to the corporates and bankers. They actually call the shots from back and governments are just tool to implement their rule.

The byline about the Chief Economic Advisor being not in the loop and the “whispers” only confirm the wisdom of keeping a lot of people out of the loop, does it not? This article is the same old sewage packaged in a new bottle of eloquence. This too shall pass. The real big question is: how is government going to restrain the officials from taking more bribes to make up their losses and flouting the efforts of the government to contain corruption and black money? Will the lower rungs of government be forced to become more honest, and if so how? Will we see some examples of swift trials and convictions at all levels to really bring down the malaise? Will the courts help the government if it tries to do that, or will they drag their feet as always and become obstructionist like the party of PC that has been in power too long and has allowed things to deteriorate this badly in the nation? Will people like PC wear a real Indian hat and not the hat of just an Indian party?

Forget who Mr. Chidambaram was or what he had done in the past and focus on what he says and we shall realise there is lot of substance in what he says. Two vital issues remain unaddressed, (1) Total value of Rs.10 lac crores of Rs.1000 and Rs.500 notes in circulation with the public (i.e. excluding cash held in currency chests and banks)as on 8-11-2016 is to be exchanged, What will be printing requirements of the remonetisation and existing printing capacity? What should be the judicious mix of new notes of Rs.2000 and Rs.500, so as to ensure enough liquidity? (Should we be so stupid that we decide to print all requirement in one single denomination of Rs.2000?) How many notes have been printed so far and how many remain to be printed? (2) As of now, there are restrictions on withdrawal and cash is deposited in banks not as ‘time deposits’ (i.e. FDs) but as ‘demand deposits'(i.e. SB. and Current A/c). Think of what can happen after 30th December 2016, when all restrictions are withdrawn. There will be scramble and mad rush for withdrawal of these deposits. Will the banks have enough cash to pay off all the deposits? The PM has asked for 50 days. Ok. But what happens on the 51st day? These questions remains unanswered.

Mr Chidambaram, what you said regarding the inconveniences and the financial losses suffered by common man are absolutely right. But who is responsible for all the muck that was created by way of black money which has become of mammoth proportion after almost 70 years of independence. What would you do if in your house some of your family members created dirt everywhere. The Congress has created this dirt and allowed your friends and colleagues irrespective of political affiliations and those who help you across the spectrum ie bureaucrats, businessmen, journalists, and all the award wapsi gang etc who spoke for you until now. Now despite the inconveniences people have accepted the demonetization whole heartedly but the indigestion could be seen to those who impacted with demonetization. So, please do not cry for the common man including middle class. They will tide over the inconveniences which is easing by the hour. The success of this scheme is the secrecy it maintained and if the Chief Economic Adviser is not aware of it what is your problem? Let him deal with it. Before you ask questions, the questions to you are: 1) Why Congress did not take any effective steps to curb black money? If you had done so, things would have come this far. 2) Did you ever think why, despite India growing at 8% or above during your regime, why was there a jobless growth? My answer is: You allowed crony capitalism – mega corruption scandals amounting to lakhs of crores of rupees have been stashed by you and your friends which are lying in the form of black money of which sizeable portion is in cash and remainder in real estate and bullion. Just because of a few filthy rich can chase anything with any price, the middle income group can only see everything from a distance. 3) Did you ever raise a finger on your first family when she is reported to have amassed large wealth outside and her family members grab the land of poor farmers and made a huge profit out of this. This was you did when you were in power. Would you justify if this government takes back this land and distribute to those people from whom the land was grabbed? Modi has done with some very good intentions and it is reported that several follow up measures will definitely be taken so that he will make things impossible for anyone to earn corruption. It will be very difficult for him to identify the corrupt and punish them legally given the legal delays our continues to face. So the easiest way to destroy all the illegal wealth which started with illegal cash. Now the next step will follow. 85% of Indians support this initiative no matter whatever you do to provoke the people as they know that it is for the good of the country. Modi has no hidden agenda and his this decision may have impacted several of his own partymen. So let us not confuse people. Mr Modi is on a mission mode as far as corruption and black money is concerned. So, if you are seriously interested in curbing black money which you have pathetically failed to do, please learn from Modi how he will be tacking it. Modi knows the pulse of people and have genuine solutions for India’s problem. He needs time and whether he will succeed or not is a big question. But he has definitely put in his best efforts and rest he will leave it for people to judge.

While the move will admittedly not solve the problem of black economy in one swoop, it is a bold, decisive and ambitious gamble by the party in power.
Mr. Chidambaram fails to realise that in politics, it is perception of action that matters more than its effects. And the previous govt was vilified for its inactivity, policy paralysis and lack of fresh ideas.
The present govt on the other hand is seen as led by a decisive leader who is taking tough decisions, going against his own core constituency in order to end the scourge of black money that every Indian will obviously support.
It is this objective and intention behind the decision of the govt that will get more popularity and support from the masses.
That it will not solve the problem permanently is besides the point.

The consequences you have highlighted are absolutely true and it looks like that govt. was not well prepared and made few mistakes.
However it’s a reality now and we all have to face it.
I consider you as one most of pragmatic, forthright and intellectual leader in Indian politics today, i am extremely keen to know your views on couple of things.

    1.
The move of ”Demonetising” or to call it exchange of old currency notes to new one -Will it really clean the mess created by black money- if yes to what extent ?

    2.
Many people talk about economic growth being slow down and business activities will be suffered for next two quarters or so, is it true ! are we seeing this temporary trend (two quarters) or this will be continued for long –

    3.
What would be your advise to the govt. of India for the next important steps to repair the damage done and move forward ?

I shall greatly appreciate your views on above lines either through your column or a brief reply whichever suits you the best.

    P. Chiddu will, of course, shed crocodile tears, after exaggerating the undoubted disruption any demonetisation exercise will involve. Indian Media is also “fishing in troubled waters”, because they know that within another three weeks, the water would be calmer. Next two weeks are the only window of opportunity for our Media and Failed politicians like P. Chiddu.

There is no guarnatee that Black Money will be wiped out from India. Corruption is hiding inside the minds not in money which will soon be printed and copied by even China or Pakistan in now bigger denomination of Rs. 2000. How many times and how many future Government will ban bigger or biggest currency. To root out this disease people thinking will have to change. The more people in pain they more corruption it will generate because of demonetisation. This was nothing else but Modi’s election stunt trying to portray him saint while rest of opposition as villian. Greed bring more harm than good so Modi may also lose 2019 Election in the same way he lost 2015 Delhi Election after winning all seven Lok sabha seats in 2014 because suffering of tens of crores of people will grow at alarming pace. Destroying a Nation takes weeks or months but rebuilding takes many decades.

Promises that were never kept – Being taken care of by MODI :- Drishtikone com/12-amazing-accomplishments-modi-government-2016/ For decades now, Indian public has been promised so many things which were never given. “Garibi Hatao” (and its variations) has been a great slogan only given to fool the public in every election. Even after 65 years, India didn’t have electricity in all the villages, proper roads, an efficient railways, closing on the disagreements with neighboring countries and even giving the Defense personnel their due. And that is where MODI government has done things which even after so many decades had only been promised but never undertaken or closed.

High chance that the biggest bubble will burst and most of the currency will be in no men’s land. Beware, Those who stocked dollar. Actually ruling elite don’t want paper money any more, it has served its purpose. Yes, we will move to cashless transactions, but the real loser will be poor and middle class. But if for a minute I assume that the recommendation was to go ahead with this idea, the only think that I would have maintained secrecy of would have been the time of implementation. Maintaining secrecy at the concept stage probably was the strategic mistake.

note less than 3% population pays income tax….means 97% of the population falls below 2.5lakhs / annum

a number of small business and service providers such as road side vendors, small shops, gorceries, tailors, barber, small farming, a number of small eateries / restarants , dhaabas, small transportaions / taxi/ autorickshae etc etc etc….. have profit ( or declared profit) less than 2.5Lakhs / annum…so they do not pay taxes

to generate those profits —> their revenues must be anywhere from 3 to 8 times more i.e 8 to 20 lakhs….a lot of it ( majoriyt of it) cash based transactions.

Sir, if Modi is incompetent to handle, what prevented a PM with PhD in Economics and you the best brain in the whole universe as FM, failed to arrest black money. On the other hand UPA encouraged black economy through scam a day. At least Modi had got the guts to take the bull by its horn. In UPA & partners every family of ministers had become billionaires within the span of 10 years of UPA. How?.

The country is suffering because you have a PM having a PHD in Teanomics
From the university of Railway station
And then you have a lawyer as a FM who has made huge money from the misery of people as lawyers always do

So we can expect a Sab Ki Thok Do
Type of decision making for our country in every ministry of the govt
Enjoy BJP wallas till the pain becomes unbearable and then put them to hibernate for 50 years

We the honest tax payers are happy and ready to bear the hardship for few more days. PhD in Teanomics is far better than a PhD in Economics and doing nothing and serving as a errand boy of a dynasty.

If Modi had to take this step it was because of the failure of the MMSingh PC team to curb black money and corruption, tackle fake notes etc. This step was necessary and Modi had the guts to do it,though it could have been better handled by rushing currency to the rural areas, industrial centres etc but that was the RBIs failure.
